Showing File
Extensions in Windows Explorer
The default for Windows Explorer is to “not show” the file extensions in the
"file list" view. This could
allow you to think a .txt file is safe to open and not a virus because it is
only a harmless text file. This is
deceiving because many email viruses have double extensions (.txt.exe, or
.txt.vbs). The .exe or .vbs extension
will be concealed and all you see is the .txt.
I recommend you NOT to hide file extensions as follows:
Open My Computer
Select Tools | Folder Options and
click on View tab
Uncheck the box for “Hide file
extensions for known file types”
